No more long lines of passengers at airport

Commonwealth Ports Authority Executive Director Efrain Camacho said the baggage handling system uses an x-ray machine “as big as a house.”

The Transportation Security Administration no longer need to open and check pieces of luggage which now go through the x-ray machine.

This quick process cuts the passengers’ waiting time, Camacho said.

Passengers do not have to wait in line to have their baggage checked.

“This is a major accomplishment,” Camacho said.

He recalled that it was in 2004 when the federally funded project was supposed to be implemented.

After he assumed office in November last year, he found out that the baggage handling system had not been certified.

A big amount of money was spent to build the system and yet it was not being used, he said.

Passengers, he noted, continued to experience delays as they waited while their bags were opened and checked.

Camacho said the inspection of baggage could take as long as 25 minutes per passenger.

He said the 25 minutes could have been spent by the passengers patronizing the restaurants and stores inside the airport.

“So I looked into it to see what it took to have the system certified,” he said.

Camacho said they are still going through the test phase “but the numbers that we have indicate that the system mostly likely will be certified by TSA.”
