Fishing derby grand prize winner arrested for hitting wife, taxi driver

Suspect Anthony Mendiola Camacho, 36, who was also a convicted sex offender was arrested at 1:15 a.m. for separate charges of assault and battery and domestic violence.

Acting Department of Public Safety spokesman Jason T. Tarkong said at about 12:23 a.m. yesterday, police responded to an assault and battery incident in Capital Hill.

Tarkong said the responding police officers met the victim, a 37-year-old Bangladeshi taxi driver near the Governor’s Office.

Police learned the victim was driving a taxi when he noticed a sedan directly behind his car with the headlights on high beam.  As the victim’s car continued its way to Capital Hill, the suspect’s vehicle behind him suddenly passed and overtook his car.

The victim told police that without warning, the suspect’s car suddenly stopped causing him to drive his car off the highway to avoid a collision.   He said the suspect’s car stopped several feet in front of his car.

Tarkong said the suspect, whom the victim described as a local male in his mid 30’s, about 5’6” tall, medium build, and covered with tattoos,  approached the victim with a machete on his left hand.

Police also learned that the suspect confronted the victim and punched him on the face while still holding the machete.

The victim, who was able to write down the license plate number of the suspect’s car, called the police.

The suspect’s vehicle was described as a Blue 2010 Mazda 3 registered to Antonio M. Camacho.

Tarkong said the police report did not mention what instigated the assault or why the suspect assaulted the victim.

At about 12:45 a.m., or less than 20 minutes later, police responded to an assault and battery and domestic violence incident in Tanapag Village.

According to the victim, the suspect arrived home intoxicated at about 12:30 a.m.

She told police  they had an argument when she asked him why he arrived home late. The victim said the suspect then pulled her hair and slapped her face several times.

The victim told police the domestic abuse against her happened before, usually when the suspect is under the influence of alcohol.

She said by the time she called the police, the suspect had already fled in his father’s car, a blue 2010 Mazda 3 sedan with license license plate # ACD-634.

The suspect was arrested by the intersection of Isa Drive and Chalan Pale Arnold Road.

Tarkong said a machete was found inside the suspect’s vehicle and taken into evidence.

The car was impounded.
