NMC accreditation reaffirmed

NMC will remain accredited until 2012.

This was announced by NMC Chairman Charles Cepeda during the Liberation Day parade on Saturday.

“Thanks for all of your support and congratulation to NMC,” Cedepa told the crowd.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial congratulated the board of regents and NMC President Carmen Fernandez .

“We are very proud of NMC — today NMC is back to normal, so congratulations NMC,” he said.

In an interview, Fernandez said: “We will continue the good work we are doing and ensure that NMC remains an excellent institution for our students and our people.”

Fernandez said the NMC campuses on Rota and Tinian will remain under review.

“We will continue to move forward,” she added.

Last year, NMC shut down its academic programs on its Tinian and Rota campuses to address the concerns of the accreditation commission.

NMC has said the suspension of certain academic programs on Rota and Tinian was necessary to meet the strict standards of accreditation.

In a separate interview, Cepeda said the reaffirmation of NMC shows that its board and administration “are doing the right thing in the right direction.”

He added, “We are elated and we’re very very happy. We have our trust in the president and the NMC administration. We just have to be strong and continue on the course.”

“What a beautiful day to make an announcement to the people of the CNMI,” Fernandez said. “As we celebrate the 4th of July we can also celebrate the strong foundations of the CNMI’s high education institution.”

She thanked Speaker Arnold I. Palacios, Reps. Ralph DLG. Torres, Victor B. Hocog, Justo S. Quitugua and David M. Apatang, who, she said, were the “key leaders” in helping NMC renew its accreditation.

Fernandez also extended her gratitude to Office of Insular Affairs Director Nikolao Pula, Fitial, Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos, former Washington Rep. Pete A. Tenorio and CNMI Congressman Gregorio C. Sablan.

In Feb. 2008, WASC ordered NMC to “show cause” as to why its accreditation should not be revoked.
