Erlinda C. Naputi, the children’s library associate, said the program allows children to learn basic sign language and get involved in cultural activities, which include movie showing, story sharing, crafts and special guest day, which involves government agencies as well as private and non-profit organizations.
On Friday, Joey Dela Cruz, Office of the Homeland Security Citizen Corps program coordinator, was the guest lecturer and he talked about disaster preparedness and how to respond to emergency situations.
Naputi said the activity is divided in two sessions which include reading time.
On Saturday, the children made a presentation on basic Chamorro dance steps, Naputi said.
Bryan Manabat, CNMI Motheread/Fatheread Literacy Program assistant coordinator, said children from four to 12 years old can participate in the summer reading fun program.
The children are usually brought by their parents to the center to attend the learning activities, Manabat said.
The goal of this activity, Naputi said, is to keep the children busy while they learn about culture, arts and reading.
Compared to last year, the number of participants this year has increased, she added.
“The program really attracts the children,” she said.
Naputi said guest lecturers from various government agencies are scheduled every Friday to make their presentations.
These include the Division of Fish and Wildlife, the American Red Cross, the Division of Environment Quality, the Public School System, Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service, and the Motheread/Fatheread program.
The sponsors of the program are the Aqua Resort Club, 360 Revolving Restaurant, 670 Rock Steady Shop, Bestseller Bookstore, Big Dipper Ice Cream, Coca Cola Co.
