More than 200 people came to the conference which was held at the Ked Community Center in Airai to participate in the discussion.
It was a whole day activity and was attended by traditional leaders, Presidents and members of each organization, Airai State employees and group leaders and chaperons from 2009 Summer Youth Program.There was a panel of discussion and representatives of each organization presented progress reports of their program.Governor Vicky N. Kanai said 80 young men and women registered for this year’s Summer Youth Program and joined in the conference.“This is a good opportunity for them to hear what the elders have to say and to learn something from the men and women of Airai. The purpose of this conference is to hear the report of the people in charge to know what they have done since the last conference, what’s the status of their organization and how many members have joined and what’s the goal and objectives of the organization,” Gov. Kanai said in an interview on Saturday.Kanai said the objective of the conference is to build a network and close communication between the organizations and the State.“The best approach is to work with the chiefs so that we can work together. If we have resources the best way is to consolidate our efforts and our resources and help each other to develop our State. Our goal is if we work together, we can accomplish a lot. We want to have an open communication to improve the plans for the betterment of the people of Airai,” Kanai said.Dr. Patrick Tellei, President of the rar Ngaracholechodech, Ellen Eungel, President of rar Bochochod, Edwina Ngiraikelau, President of rar Kerisebsub, Charles Obichang, Betty Salvador, vice president rar Prekork, Dembert Obak of Merredel rar Ngarangmui, Kerungil Augustine of Merredel rar Ngarasesb and Phillip Polloi were among the panelists of the conference.Representatives of different departments of the Airai State also gave reports and joined in the panel discussion.Dr. Victor Yano gave opening remarks while Speaker of Airai State Legislature Meluat Telei rendered a closing remarks.
