San Remedio ends Cabo Express’ 2-season streak

This year’s tournament was participated in by 75 teams of anglers nine of them were from Guam. During last year’s event about 50 boats sailed.

San Remedio captained by Antonio O. Camacho reached as far as 14 miles north east of Marpi where they caught the blue marlin at 1:17 p.m.

Camacho’s anglers are Damian Pua, Anthony M. Camacho and Melvin K. Aldan.

Last year’s biggest catch by Cabo Express led by Rep. Heinz S. Hofschneider caught 484 pounds of blue marlin. His anglers were John Castro, Luis Manibusan, Patrick Diaz and Conrad Hofschneider.

They were the also the defending champion then, having caught the biggest in 2007, a 288.5 pounds of blue marlin.

The younger Camacho said it took them almost two hours before the

managed to pull the struggling blue marlin into the boat.

“We pulled it up three times and it went down three times,” said the anglers who used a 16-inch rod and reel when they also struggled to hold on with their catch.

They haven’t taken their lunch at that moment yet, Camacho said but they forgot about their hunger when the reel screamed giving them the signal of the winning catch.

Camacho said it was the first time San Remedio won the international fishing tournament.

Cabo Express won the second place this year in the same category for the 224 pounds of blue marlin and anglers of boat CM-2337-CF settled for third with their 191.7 pound blue marlin.

Meanwhile, Tinian I won the Home Run contest, an added feature of this year’s tournament in which the first boat to land with catch in all the categories will get $500.

For landing first last Saturday with 12.25 pounds of Wahoo, Tinian I anglers, Samuel Enano and Aonsefi Mahilum were $500 richer.
