Legislature pays tribute to Cory Aquino

(Legislature) — Members of the Guam Legislature pay tribute to Philippine President Corazon Aquino, the leader of the 1986 People Power Revolution, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 76.

Democratic Sens. Rory J. Respicio and Judi P. Guthertz have planned a memorial service at the legislature in honor of the icon of democracy, who succumbed to colon cancer.

“This service will recognize her contribution to society and help ensure that Cory’s torch of freedom and democracy will continue to inspire us all,” Guthertz said.

Republican Sens. Eddie Calvo, Sen. Ray Tenorio and Sen. Tom Ada introduced a legislative resolution expressing the legislature’s “heartfelt sympathy, condolences and solidarity in mourning” with the Filipino people for the loss of Aquino, “a hero and an inspiration for endless generations.”

The resolution describes Aquino as “a legend of democracy and the power of people.”

Aquino’s legacy “will live forever in the hearts and minds of the free and everyone fighting for liberty throughout the world,” the resolution states.

Senators noted the importance of memorializing Aquino’s work and legacy.

“She was a symbol of hope and peace for persons in countries seeking freedom and social equality through a stable and democratic government,” Respicio said. “President Aquino showed the world that by working together people can overcome their current state of affairs no matter how dismal.”

Guthertz said the late president had the hearts and felt the pulse of the people as she captured the presidency. “The ‘People Power’ revolt put people first. This philosophy helped make sure that our Filipino brothers and sisters are able to enjoy life’s liberties in a free and democratic society,” she said.

The Governor’s Office, the Filipino Community of Guam, the Consul General of the Philippines and Commander, Joint Region Marianas, members of the Counselor Corp, island officials and others will be invited to assist in the ceremony to be held at the session hall starting at 9 a.m. on Friday.

Scholarship program for NMC education majors available

(NMC) — The Northern Marianas College Board of Regents announced today the availability of a scholarship program designed for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in education at the College.

“We are extremely pleased to be offering these scholarships in time for the Fall 2009 semester,” said Charles Cepeda, chairperson of the NMC Board of Regents. “The scholarship program that the Regents approved will help identify and encourage the next generation of educators and educational leaders.”

The scholarship program aims to 1) promote higher education by providing financial assistance for college students in their pursuit of professional careers; 2) help alleviate the critical current and future shortage of skilled and trained workforce for the CNMI; and, 3) provide current public and private sector employees with opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills, and enhance their career and professional development.

“We strongly encourage all education students to apply and take advantage of this scholarship opportunity,” added Cepeda.

The scholarships are based on merit and financial need and will be awarded to the recipients on the bases of the candidate’s community involvement, academic background, letters of recommendation, and a written essay. An interview may also be required.

Recipients of the scholarship will receive up to $500.00 per semester for up to eight semesters or up to the completion of a bachelor’s degree, whichever is sooner.

To be eligible, a student must be a U.S. citizen (or green card holder) and a CNMI resident for the past three years; be accepted and enrolled as a full-time student at NMC; have a high school or college cumulative GPA of 2.00 or better; and, be able to demonstrate financial need.

If selected to receive the scholarship, the applicant must also sign an agreement stating that he or she will work in the Commonwealth after graduating from the Northern Marianas College for a period twice as long as the period for which the applicant received the NMC Board of Regents Scholarship.

The deadline for submitting applications to the NMC Financial Aid Office is August 21, 2009. Applications and additional information can be downloaded from www.nmcnet.edu, or contact NMC’s Financial Aid Office at 234-5498 extension 1527.
