Man charged for threatening to kill common-law wife

Assistant Attorney General George L. Hasselback filed the information against Jawn A. Joyner for one count of attempted aggravated assault and battery for violently attacking and threatening to kill his common-law wife on Sept. 4, 2008 in the presence of their minor child.

The defendant was also charged with one count of assault and battery for the same incident, another count of assault and battery for beating his minor child who was trying to prevent the defendant from harming the child’s mother.

He was charged with one count of criminal coercion by installing fear in his common-law wife that if his demands will not be complied with, the defendant or a third person will harm her.

 The defendant threatened his common-law wife that he or another person would kill her if she attempted to file a criminal complaint against him or report to the police, the AGO stated.

The defendant is also facing one count of interfering with a domestic violence report, and one count of assault for beating again his common-law wife on Feb. 7, 2009.

The AGO said the defendant threatened his common-law wife that he would come t their residence, physically assault her and kidnap her children.

The AGO likewise charged the defendant with one count of violating an order of protection issued by the court when he failed to return his minor child to the custody of his common-law wife in a timely fashion, despite knowing that he is subject to an order of protection.

The defendant was arrested last week and was brought to court for a bail hearing.

Associate Judge Perry B. Inos set a $10,000 bail for the defendant’s temporary liberty —

10 percent or $1,000 should be in cash bail and $9,000 in unsecured bond.

The defendant was released to a third party custodian.

In her affidavit, Detective Andrea C. Ozawa stated that on Feb. 7, 2009, the defendant’s common-law wife called the Department of Public Safety to report that her former common-law husband had threatened to beat her and kidnap her children.
