Saipan student graduates from Dartmouth
HANOVER, N.H. (Darmouth College) — Faye Hwa-Young Yu from Saipan, a member of the class of 2009, graduated cum laude from Dartmouth College, one of more than 1,000 students receiving bachelor of arts degrees at the Spring 2009 commencement exercises.
Yu is the daughter of Youngsik R Yu and Seung-Hee C Yu. Yu majored in chemistry and minored in engineering sciences.
Dartmouth, the ninth oldest college in the nation, was founded in 1769.
Noted as a highly competitive college, Dartmouth has a total enrollment of 4,200 undergraduates and over 1,000 graduate students in engineering, business, and medicine.

(NMC) — Northern Marianas College, through the Division of Community Programs and Services’ Community Development Institute, is offering short-term courses to individuals preparing to take the Praxis I and II examinations.
The courses are designed to give potential test-takers an idea of what to expect on the Praxis I and II exams.
The Praxis I review will cover Pre-Professional Skills Test in math, writing and reading.
The Praxis II review will cover elementary education: literature and language arts, mathematics, history and social studies, and sciences.

(NMC) — Northern Marianas College will be conducting an additional math placement test today, Aug. 20, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, in Room A-9 at the As Terlaje campus.
Those who wish to take courses at NMC must take the math and English placement tests.
Registration for NMC’s Fall 2009 semester is still ongoing until Friday, Aug. 21, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
Late registration is on Saturday, Aug. 22, 9 a.m.-12 noon.
Test takers must bring a valid photo ID — driver’s license, passport or school ID — and pencils. No admittance to the testing room will be allowed after the starting time. Calculators may be used when taking the test.
There is a $25 fee for the math placement test that must be paid in advance at the NMC cashier.
No one will be allowed into the testing room without proof of payment — a receipt for the placement test fee.

(EMO) — The National Weather Service on Guam yesterday said Tropical Storm Vamco had been upgraded to a typhoon.
At 1 p.m. yesterday afternoon, Vamco was centered near latitude 17.6 degrees north and longitude 157.4 degrees east, or about 790 miles east-northeast of Saipan.
No watches or warnings were in effect for the CNMI.
Vamco was moving slowly north at around 3 mph and was expected to move northwest over the next 24 hours.
