Students to tour Saipan’s wetlands

About 15 students —  13 to 16 years old — will be introduced to wetlands, endangered species and its habitat, as well as how to use mosquito repellent.

The children will take a hike on the wetland trail and bird-watch during the half-day event.

Division of Environmental Quality spokeswoman Lisa Huynh Eller said one of the program’s goals is to encourage students to share the information they learn with their family and friends, and also to inspire them to take steps to reduce land-based pollution.

She said participants will create a take-home action plan for cutting down pollution at their homes and in their villages.

DEQ and the Coastal Resources Management Office are hosting the program through funding from the National

Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coral Reef Initiative.
