3 more schools get WASC accreditation

The Public School System is expecting all nine schools visited by WASC this year to also get accredited, according to PSS language arts and accreditation coordinator Steven Smith.

On Monday, Dandan Elementary School Principal Jonas Barcinas announced they received a six-year term accreditation, with a midterm review expiring on June 30, 2015.

Aside from DES, Smith said the San Antonio Elementary School and Koblerville Elementary School also obtained their six-year term accreditations from WASC.

“We are really happy. Last year, all eight schools were accredited. Also this year it looks like all the schools will be accredited because our schools are really in a very good condition,” Smith told the Variety.

One of the factors that led to the school’s receiving their accreditation is the active involvement of the accrediting teams in complying with the WASC requirements.

Smith said the PSS leadership, particularly Education Commissioner Rita A. Sablan, provided all the necessary support to all schools.

“Our commission is very much involved to make sure all the things and data they need is accurate when they submitted the report,” he said.

The schools had all the funds, time and support they needed from PSS, he added.

Within this month, Smith said, they are also expecting the results of accreditation for the William S. Reyes Elementary School, Tinian Elementary School, Tinian High School and Junior High School, Kagman High School, and Saipan Southern High School.

Last year, he said, of the 20 public schools in the Commonwealth only one got a six-year accreditation without a mid term review. This means, he added, the school is “so good and the WASC will not bother to check out.”

However, PSS is expecting another one this year for a six-year accreditation with no visit by WASC accreditation team.

The Kagman Elementary School and Chacha Overview Junior High School will have their accreditation until 2010. Those accreditation due until 2011 are G.T. Camacho Elementary School, Garapan Elementary School, Sinapalo Elementary School, Hopwood Junior High School, and Marianas High School.

The Tanapag Elementary School, Oleai Elementary School, and San Vicente Elementary School will have their accreditation until 2014.
