Donni Springs comes alive

CUC deputy director for water and wastewater division Bruce Megarr said Donni Springs now has a 75 percent normal flow.

Donni Springs is one of the water sources for Garapan, I Denni, As Teo, Navy Hill, Puerto Rico, Sadog Tasi, Chalan Galaide, Rapagau, Sugar King and China Town.

Megarr said the continuous rain has a great impact on the water level of Donni Springs.

Donni Springs yielded nothing during the dry season but it is now producing an average of 3,000 to 4,000 gallons a minute.

But, Megarr said, CUC‘s water status is in still critical condition “until we have 24-hour pressurization all over the island.”

“We are a rain-dependent utility as we have no rivers here,” he added.

Megarr said CUC is aiming to pressurize all areas and deliver water supply efficiently, thus, it is focusing now on metering all its water consumers.

CUC, he added, wants to fairly bill customers for the volume they use, while giving them incentives to conserve water.

“We take care of our distribution system and we make sure it maintains our integrity by fixing the leaks.”

He said the island is 45 percent pressurized and will be at least 80 percent pressurized in the next three years if all the programs for the water system are implemented.

But given the amount of water into the distribution system and the current level of consumption, CUC is still unable to meet the water needs of its customers 24 hours a day, he said.
