Syed: Garment trust fund should benefit workers

Rabby Syed, United Workers Movement, NMI, said his group will also help locate displaced garment workers still on island.

Syed made the statement after Gov. Benigno R. Fitial asked Bellas to reconsider the trust fund’s decision not to distribute $600,000 in available funds to former garment workers.

The funds should be given to the rightful beneficiaries, Syed said.

“That fund should be exclusively given to the garment factory workers,” he added.

He is requesting all garment workers in the CNMI to meet with his group on Aug. 22 at the Kilili Pavilion.

The trust fund will accept  applications from former garment workers who want to avail of the funds until Aug. 15.

Syed said the trust fund should  extend the deadline until all former garment workers are informed, including those who have already returned to their home countries.

He said Bellas should ensure that former workers who are no longer in the CNMI can also avail of the funds.
