No need to rush, says Fiji PM

Bainimarama said his cabinet did not discuss any presidential nominees.

“There is no need to rush in appointing a president,” he said.

Bainimarama said Vice President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau is currently performing the duty of the president since Ratu Iloilo retired.

He said Ratu Epeli will perform the functions of the president until a substantive appointment is made by Chief Justice Anthony Gates upon the advice and nomination of the cabinet.

Bainimarama, however, confirmed that the appointing of a new president will be discussed in the next cabinet meeting.

Earlier this week, Bainimarama said the post of president was open to all races and not just for indigenous Fijians.

He said his government’s new roadmap is to build a nonracial Fiji and everyone should work toward it.

In the past, the post of the president and vice president had been reserved for the indigenous Fijians and the appointing authority was the Great Council of Chiefs.
