Division deputy director Bruce Megarr said the “SmartReader” will increase accuracy and efficiency in meter reading.
CUC acquired the device through funding from the U.S. Office of Insular Affairs, he added.
Kagman will be the pilot area for the new meter reader.
According to Megarr, the new electronic meter reader can detect water leaks and tampered meters.
CUC, he added, learned that some customers are pulling their meters from the system during high consumption at night and installing them back at day time.
Last week, 2,000 new meters arrived on Saipan, shipped by Severn Trent Services, the vendor of the failed meters installed in 2004 and 2005.
Megarr said the improvement of the metering system is in compliance with the federal stipulated orders.
