The coconut, he said in his proclamation, has provided the FSM people with food, water as well as materials for clothing and shelter.
The coconut, its primary product copra, and other bi-products, play key roles in the FSM economy, he added.
The FSM acknowledges the importance of coconuts and the need to accelerate the development of new varieties and new uses to serve the needs of the people in the years to come, the president said.
He noted that the FSM is a member of the Asia and Pacific Coconut Community, which was formed 30 years ago to promote, coordinate and harmonize all activities of the coconut industry.
