Ex-lawmaker vows to be bridge between mayor’s office, Saipan delegation

In an interview yesterday, Taman, an independent candidate, said  he may propose the abolition of legislative delegations.

The key issue, he pointed out, is the empowerment of  municipal government over local matters.

As a former lawmaker, Taman said he knows what the local delegation is for — to secure pet projects that can be better handled by the mayor’s office.

A former Republican, Taman  earlier sought the Covenant Party’s nomination.

The ruling party, however, picked former Senate President Juan S. Demapan who was later removed from the slate and replaced by former council member Marianne DLG. Tudela.

Taman said his proposal to abolish the legislative delegation will be presented to the public.

He said he is running for mayor because he is concerned at how the global crisis has been affecting the island’s socio-economic conditions.

“ I see the need for us to bond together and work collectively and innovatively to find real solutions to ease the sufferings in our community and prevent our people from leaving the commonwealth.” Taman said.
