Finance chief to represent governor in US meeting

GOVERNOR Ralph DLG Torres is not attending the National Governors Association’s 114th Annual Winter Meeting that will be held in Washington, D.C. from Jan. 28 to 31.

Instead, he is sending Finance Secretary David DLG Atalig to attend this year’s meeting on his behalf, Atalig told Variety on Wednesday. He left the island for the nation’s capital on Saturday.

On Monday, the governor issued a memorandum, informing all department heads that the Finance secretary “is out of the Commonwealth on official business from January 22, 2022 through February 10, 2022.”

The governor designated the department’s Group Health Life Insurance Manager Velma P. Benavente as the acting Finance secretary from Jan. 22 to  Feb. 2, and Administrative Services Director Margaret Bertha C. Torres as acting Finance secretary from Feb. 3 to 10.

In their 114th winter meeting, the nation’s governors will discuss “best practices and bipartisan collaboration on leading policy issues including infrastructure, computer science education and cybersecurity, as well as the importance of bipartisan leadership.”

They will join U.S. cabinet secretaries and leaders from business, academia and philanthropy for “solutions-driven conversations around the top issues in states and territories, including those raised or underscored during the public-health challenge that began in early 2020.”

In December, Atalig and the governor’s chief of staff, Wil Castro, participated in the NGA Infrastructure Summit in Annapolis, Maryland.
