Authored by Rep. Janet U. Maratita, House Resolution 21-41 recognized Apatang’s two consecutive terms as Saipan mayor during which he “has made and continues to make so many important strides that have had such a positive impact throughout the villages on Saipan.”

The mayor shed tears of joy as he received the framed copy of the resolution.

Apatang, who served seven terms in the House of Representatives, began his public service as chief of procurement and supply. He is also served as acting director of finance and accounting, and a member of the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council.

He honorably served as a member of the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1987 and saw action in Vietnam. He was stationed at various locations in the U.S. and around the world including the Panama Canal Zone and Wurzburg, Germany.

In his remarks on Wednesday, the mayor said he was very humbled by the recognition from the House.

“Usually this kind of resolution is given to someone who has passed away,” he said. “But I am very humbled for being recognized for the things I have done in the community and for our people,” the mayor said.

He likewise thanked the people for the privilege and opportunity to serve them.

“I also want to thank my late wife, Antonia Mafnas Apatang, for helping me throughout my career. All my kids and siblings are here, and the mayor’s office staff. I am very thankful to them, too,” he said.
