The project aims to develop a “customized nonprofit mentoring and support program” that includes “a comprehensive training and support system for current and developing native nonprofit organizations providing services to the Chamorro and Carolinian communities.”

It also seeks to build capacity for these organizations by establishing long-range goals and three- to five-year strategic plans for each organization.

MANGO has identified six areas that native nonprofit organizations in the Commonwealth urgently need: establishing a nonprofit, board training, sustainability, strategic planning, managing a nonprofit, and financial management.

First established in 2010, MANGO aims to address the needs of the nonprofit community in the CNMI.

The group provides guidance on a number of activities such as how to register as a nonprofit organization with the state and national governments, how to obtain tax-exempt status, and how to pursue funding opportunities.

Recognized as an umbrella organization for nonprofits, MANGO aims to give the nonprofit sector a collective voice, not just in the local community, but also regionally and internationally.

The organization will offer optional paid services to member organizations, including proposal writing, volunteer management, accounting services, and policies and procedures development.

Led by chair Maisie Tenorio, the other members of the MANGO board are vice chair Felicidad Ogumoro, secretary Emma Perez, treasurer Annale Torres, and member Laurie Peterka.

Funding for this organization was made possible through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-Administration for Children and Family, and the Administration for Native Americans.

Donors include Ka’anani’au, Susan White, Pete Perez, Martha Camacho, Efrain Camacho, Art De Oro, Vera De Oro, and Frances Sablan.

The current MANGO member organizations are the Chief Aghrubw Foundation, Carolinian Cultural Village Inc., the Northern Marianas Sports Association, the CNMI Handball Federation, the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter, the Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence, the Friends of the Mariana Trench, the Rota Island Specialty Crop Association, the Micronesia Islands Nature Alliance, Micronesian Legal Services Corporation, the Northern Marianas Descent Corporation, 500 Sails, the Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association, the CNMI Women’s Association, the Mariana Islands Basketball Foundation, Amelia Earhart Memorial Monument Inc., the Northern Marianas Humanities Council, the Saipan Chamber of Commerce, and the Center for Living Independently in the CNMI.
