JESS Farinas claimed the New Bamboo Bar November 8-Ball Tournament championship Saturday at the New Bamboo Bar of Saipan Vegas.
Despite competing with some of the island’s most experienced pool players, Farinas came out on top with a 5-0 win-loss record.
Farinas’s streak started in round two of the double-elimination tournament as he showcased his skills against Rowel Mariano.
Farinas excelled in smart placements both offensively and defensively, setting up his next shot to remain in control en route to victory.
His next opponent was the formidable Jerry Soriano who nearly had the win in the bag, but Farinas managed to remain focused as he pocketed the shots he needed to win.
In round four, Farinas was up against Rolly Villanueva, confidently knocking down back-to-back shots.
Although Villanueva fought hard to stay in the game, Farinas simply played better and soon earned his ticket to the semifinals.
Against Roman Rodriguez, Farinas was relentless and victorious once again.
Soriano was relegated to the loser’s bracket by Farinas in round 2, but that did not stop Soriano from seeking redemption.
He fought his way back up and won his next four matches, eliminating Roel Barretto, Ray Matsunaga, Rolly Villanueva and Roman Rodriguez to set up a rematch against Farinas.
In the championship game, Soriano gave it his all, but Farinas was in his element and could not be stopped as he established control early, eventually winning the match and the title.
Farinas received the first place trophy and a $500 cash prize. Soriano took home $250; Rodriguez, who placed third, won $100, while Rolly Villaneuva received the $50 fourth prize.
