Joe Camacho, Nick Sablan top senior, super senior categories

JOE “Kamikaze” Camacho and Nick Sablan shared the spotlight in the Ronald McDonald House of Charities Golf Tournament on Saturday at Laolao Bay Golf & Resort by topping their respective categories.

Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho, who finished first in the Senior Flight category, has always been a force to be reckoned with and he clearly remains a tough opponent.

His best performance was recorded on hole #7 for which he also won the Closest to the Pin Award after bringing the ball to within 8 feet from the tee to the pin.

“The conditions were just perfect,” he told Variety. “I just had a problem putting. Normally I play in the afternoon so I was not used to the putting conditions in the morning.”

But Camacho continued to play well, shooting a gross of 40 on the front nine and then improving his score on the back nine with a gross of 37 for a net score of 77. He received a $500 cash for winning first prize.

“It’s always good to support a good cause,” Camacho said, referring to the Ronald McDonald House of Charities. Asked about what he will do with his winnings he answered, “I have a baby girl so all the winnings will go to her for Christmas.”

In second place was Anthony Benavente who shot a gross of 39 on the front nine and 40 on  the back for a net of 79 to win $300.

Wilhelm Maui shared the same net score of 79 but he had to settle for the $200 third prize because Benavente had the better tie-break score.

Super senior

In the Super Senior Flight category, Nick Sablan proved that age is just a number.

Sablan, moreover, had a powerful swing and made one birdie en route to an impressive gross of 38 on the front and 41 on  the back for a net score of 79 to secure the  $500 first prize.

“I’m happy that I beat all my friends,” said Sablan in jest. “It was a scrambling game today and I couldn’t putt so I tried to make the best of a bad situation. If I could only putt, it could have been better.”

Asked what keeps him going on the golf course, he said he likes the challenge of competing with younger players.

In second place was Benjamin Jones Sr. with a net score of 82 to win $300 while Tony Satur placed third with a net score of 85 and received $200.

C Flight

In the C Flight category, Lester Manglona snatched  the $500 first prize after shooting a gross of 41 on the front nine and 45 on the back for a net score of 86.

With a gross score of 45 on the front nine and 43 on the back for a net score of 88, Zekang Ma finished second and took home $300.

In third place  was Joey Dela Cruz Jr. who received $200.
