Man accused of assaulting off-duty cop

POLICE on Sunday arrested Newton Tmarsel, 33, who was accused of assaulting an off-duty officer with a 2-by-2 piece of wood.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Dre Pangelinan said that on Oct. 24, at about 12:30 a.m., police received a 911 call reporting a disturbance at a bar in Garapan.

Police units responded to the scene where officers met with the caller who stated that “a male individual hit an off-duty female police officer before fleeing the scene.”

According to witnesses the man hit the woman’s back with a piece of 2-by-2 lumber before throwing it toward another female and hitting her foot.

Responding officers brought the man —  who was later identified as Newton Tmarsel — to the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.’s alternate care site at Kanoa Resort before he was transported to the Department of Corrections where he was booked, detained and then released.

A follow-up investigation was conducted and on Nov. 2, Superior Court Associate Judge Wesley Bogdan signed an arrest warrant for Tmarsel on charges of disturbing the peace, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery with bail set at $6,000.

On the same date at approximately 5:39 p.m., Tmarsel was arrested in Garapan. After receiving an all-clear from CHCC, he was transported to Corrections where he was booked and detained.
