This number, based on the records of the CNMI Department of Labor, includes new work permits, amended permits, duplicates, extensions, renewals, transfers, and others.
The department issued the highest number of work permits to foreign workers under “other services” category, 4,412 work permits or 29 percent of the total work permits were issued.
Private household help (maid/caretakers) is the third largest category with 1,492 work permits.
Next is the construction industry with 1,364 work permits, followed by the retail trade with 1,045 permits issued.
Administrative support, waste management and remediation service industry had 984 permits; farmers and fishermen industry, 331; real estate and rental and leasing industry, 246; professional, scientific and technical services industry, 191; transportation and warehousing, 188; manufacturing, 173; and educational services industry, 129.
Industries with less than a hundred work permits issued included arts, entertainment and recreation industry with 99; health and social care assistance, 97; agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, 59; finance and insurance, 35; management of information industry, 34; mining, quarrying and oil and gas exploration, 27; public administration, 12; management of companies and enterprises, 10; and utilities, 1.
In distribution by citizenship, 75 percent, or 11,407 of the total work permits issued in 2009 were for workers from the Philippines; China, 1,846; Korea, 618; Japan, 479; Bangladesh, 177; Thailand, 114; and “others,” 426.
Sixty-two percent, or 9,463 of the work permits issued were renewal permits; 2,207 were amended permits; 47 were duplicates; 846, extensions; 1,849 transfer permits; and only 522 were new permits.
The remaining 133 permits were classified under the “others” category.
Included in this data are 240K or foreign worker CNMI permits issued for calendar year 2009 and the figures do not reflect umbrella permits that were issued in November last year.
