BENUSTO Mori Lisua once dreamed of owning his own business. A nature lover and a family-oriented person, Lisua said he lost his job during the pandemic and had to think creatively in finding ways to put food on the table for his family.
“Being unemployed was a reality check for me,” he said. “It was an election year as well. Too many empty promises even from the people you once thought were your good friends,” he added.
But despite his dire financial situation, Lisua didn’t lose hope.
He started to see an opportunity to serve his neighbors, friends and the community by providing them with lawn care services such as brush-cutting, clearing and hauling green debris.
Growing up on the island, Lisua knows the value of taking care of its natural resources and he saw its potential as a source of income.
In October 2022, Lisua made his dream a reality by establishing Bwiibwii’s Professional Lawn Care Services.
“Our motto is ‘From grass of our lands to the shores of our beaches,’ ” he said.
Aside from providing yard and lawn cleaning services, Bwiibwii’s Professional Lawn Care Services also gives back to the community by “adopting” Makaka Beach in Garapan.
“This is where our children play so our beautiful beaches are something we need to take care of for the next generation,” Lisua told Variety during an adopt-a-place ceremony in March.
Recently, his company also took part in the Division of Coastal Resources Management’s Ocean Cleanup.
For Lisua, cleaning up the island is a natural thing to do.
“We join cleanup events because we care and we want to protect our marine life,” he said. “We want our island and its beaches to be clean. It’s for the future of our kids and the next generations. Without us parents setting a good example for our little ones, they wouldn’t really care. But because my wife and I educate our kids to do good deeds with good intentions, they understand the importance of a clean environment,” Lisua added.
The value of family
For Lisua, family is one of his strongest sources of strengths.
“My wife and kids are my inspiration, and our other family members are our true supporters. We wouldn’t be here today if not for their love and support. Of course, we are also grateful to our dear friends and other supporters,” he said.
Lisua said his ancestors taught him and his family the values of honesty, integrity and hard work.
“What motivates us to do good? It’s the lessons in life we learned from our parents and our elders who raised us to do good. So, we bring our children with us when we have to complete some of our projects. We want to show them the proper way to clean or operate small tools,” he said.
He is grateful to his family members who have always supported him no matter what.
“I want to thank my older brother Alfredo Saures for making sure our operations run smoothly when I am not around, and for all his help, love, and dedication to our family business. I’m also thankful to my other brothers Dane, Dennis, Buck, Jack, Vince, Souper, and the rest of the brothers that have showed us nothing but love and support. I am very much grateful for all the hard work you all have done. This is only the beginning of our journey,” Lisua said.
