FOR the second year in a row, Hopwood Middle School’s Jillian Pladevega has been selected as the Public School System Counselor of the Year.

She received the award during a proclamation signing for Counselors Week in the Koblerville Elementary School cafeteria on Monday.

Pladevega said she did not expect that she will again receive the award this year. “I am so shocked — I feel so blessed and humbled,” she added.

Pladevega has been a counselor at Hopwood for seven years now. “It is inspiring to work with students…. We want to mold them, but they also mold me,” she said.

Pladevega also serves as counselor for 20 middle school students enrolled in the federally funded Lina’la Malawasch Academy or LMA.

Besides providing counseling services, LMA also conducts presentations on self-esteem, coping with peer pressure, and learning to make the right choices.

The proclamation aims to recognize counselors for providing students “with the tools they need to achieve school success and plan for college, career or a robust future.”
