In a letter sent to Guerrero’s parents, Leonora and Herman Guerrero, the university’s assistant dean Song K. Choi said Herman Joseph Guerrero is among the top 16% of the engineering enrollment.

“This means that Herman Joseph has achieved a grade point average this semester of at least 3.5,” Choi stated.

“Maintaining an outstanding grade point average in any field of study at the University of Hawaii at Manoa is an exceptional accomplishment that reflects a student’s hard work, discipline, and dedication,” the letter added.

Choi stated that earning a place on the Dean’s List of the College of Engineering is “an especially noteworthy achievement in the demanding curriculum of students.”

He added, “The math, physics, chemistry, and engineering coursework, accompanied by classes in the humanities and social sciences, combine to make the engineering program one of the most difficult on campus — and thus make the Dean’s List academic ranking all the more rewarding and fulfilling.”

Herman Joseph Guerrero, 24, is a freshman student at the university.

Leonora Guerrero said her son was with the Marines for four years.

“He is using his [Veterans Affairs] education and training benefits to get his engineering degree,” she added.
