ALL recipients of the Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance program have already received their checks, SHEFA board chairman Oscar M. Babauta said.

The Department of Finance, he added, released more than $800,000 as requested by SHEFA for the spring semester.

“The SHEFA administrator has started sending the check to off-island and on-island scholarship awardees,” Babauta said.

In a previous SHEFA board meeting, administrator Merissa Rasa said they still had enough funding to cover this year’s scholarship program.

But Babauta is not sure if there will be enough funding available in the fall semester since the CNMI is still facing a severe economic crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We just hope our economic conditions will improve so we can meet our financial needs,” he added.

The law provides SHEFA with $3.5 million in poker license fee collections each year.

On Thursday, Babauta said the board met to discuss further a proposal to temporarily stop providing merit incentives to scholarship recipients.

He said the committee on awards chaired by Francisco D. Cabrera will come up with a recommendation.
