(Saipan International School) — Even in time of social distancing, teachers and school children all across the U.S. have been celebrating April as National Poetry Month.

Saipan International School elementary students have taken time to enjoy poetry in a number of meaningful ways. One of those ways was a visit with a published children’s author.

SIS elementary students and their parents joined together for a virtual visit on Google Meet with American children’s author Alicia Hogan Murphy.

Mrs. Murphy, a former elementary school teacher from the East Coast, shared some delightful poems from her poetry book “Bear Hugs and Sock Bugs.”

She inspired SIS friends to remember that they are special and to embrace their uniqueness. With humor and warm acceptance, she took time to listen and respond to student comments and questions and shared the stories behind her poetry book, and behind her first published picture book which is entitled “The Muddy Foot Prince.”

Children and parents responded positively to her presentation and some families ordered copies of her books, which Mrs. Murphy graciously agreed to autograph.

Mrs. Murphy told her new SIS fans a little bit about another book she is working on about an endearing character named “Crabby Abby” who often seems prone to misbehave.

Alicia Hogan Murphy told the families of SIS that she really enjoyed meeting with them and the feeling was definitely reciprocated. She expressed a willingness to share a program for any other elementary schools whose administrators might be interested in having her present for their students and parents.
