SAIPAN Mayor David M. Apatang issued the following statement on the passing of the Honorable Jose R. Lifoifoi, fifth speaker of the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands:

“We mourn with the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands for the passing of Jose R. Lifoifoi on May 18, 2020.  He gave so much to our islands’ development that made it easy for many who call our islands home to travel beyond our shores, grow, and prosper.

“Mr. Lifoifoi’s contributions to our government as speaker of the House of Representatives served as the cornerstone for our advancement in business, government, and political maturity.  His commitment to bringing airline services to our people and staying connected with the rest of the world made air travel so convenient.

“His leadership as president of the United Micronesia Development Association brought many good things to our CNMI, and we will never forget his foresight which have benefited many of us.

“We want to also remember Mr. Lifoifoi for his generosity and sacrifices during his tenure as chairman of the Commonwealth Ports Authority.

“The CNMI government faced many challenges in modernizing its airport and seaports to expand commerce in our islands, and Mr. Lifoifoi was at the forefront of those challenges.  His leadership as chairman of the CPA board will continue to inspire current and future board members to give it their all in performing their roles as decision makers for the agency.

“Our condolences to his wife Cecilia and children and grandchildren, and may our prayers bring peace and relief in their time of grief.”
