SONYA P. Dancoe, PE is the new president of the Rotary Club of Saipan.

She and the other new officers were installed Tuesday night at the Surf Club in Chalan Kanoa where the club also honored  Das Krishnan as Rotarian of the Year and community volunteer Max Aguon as Citizen of the Year.

The other new club officers are Sean Ficke, president-elect; Wendell Posadas, vice president; Irene Holl, secretary; Ryan Yulo, treasurer; and Curtis Dancoe, sergeant-at-arms.

The directors are Ivan Ilmov for international services; Joseph Torres, vocational services; Jessy Loomis, club services; Joann Aquino, community services; Das Krishnan, Rotary foundation; and Gregory Borja, new generation.

Rotarian and Supreme Court Associate Justice Perry B. Inos was the inducting officer.

In her remarks, the new club president said they will continue to “strive to practice the ideals of Rotary in our home, our businesses and in our community….”

She noted, “So much has changed in the world as we enter the second decade of the 21st century and so will the way we progress forward.”

Mrs. Dancoe said the club will continue to pave the way for  its future leaders, adding that in 2018, Rotary International changed its constitution and by-laws to allow Rotaract members to become Rotarians.

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored organization for young adults.

“Now more than ever we must strive to grow our club with a sustainable action plan by cultivating future young leaders in Rotary,” Mrs. Dancoe said.

In her remarks, outgoing  president Marcia Ayuyu said it was an honor to be a leader of the club.

“Thank you all for your untiring support and teamwork during my term,” she added.

She said she made  several promises as she started her term last year and “as far as I know all of them have been accomplished.”

Ayuyu at the same time encouraged club members to support their new leadership.

“The Rotary Club is all about helping the community and…I am very proud of what we did for our community. We all did a great job.”

Ayuyu then presented the club members she sponsored during her term as president: Joe Torres, Judy Mendieta, Dave Baker, Ryan Yulo, Wendell Posadas, Irene Holl, Jessy Loomis, Marvin Deleon Guerrero, Larry Phillip and John Arroyo who, in turn, sponsored Mary Grace Bautista.

As for this year’s Rotarian of the Year,  Das Krishnan, Ayuyu said he is a great asset to the club and a very active member.

“He is a Rotarian in action,” she said, adding that the award was given to Krishnan because of his commitment and dedication and for his service above self.

Club past president Greg Borja said community volunteer Max Aguon is Citizen of the Year because he exemplifies the Rotary Club motto, “Service Above Self.”

Borja  said for many years now, Aguon has been tirelessly helping clean up and beautify the island.

Event master of ceremonies and club past president Curtis Dancoe said the Citizen of the Year Award is presented by the council of past presidents.

“This is an award given every year since 1980, and it’s the highest honor bestowed to an individual in our community who has served in our community in a voluntary capacity — one who exemplifies our motto and gives unselfishly his or her life to serve others,” Mr. Dancoe said.

He also recognized the leadership and contributions of two past presidents who have passed away: Pete Shilling and Marianas Variety founding publisher Abed E. Younis.

In addition, Mr. Dancoe presented this year’s Paul Harris Fellows: Greg Borja, Marcia Ayuyu, Tatiana Babauta, Das Krishnan, Tom Thornburg and Dennis Yoshimoto.

Paul Harris Fellows are individuals who contribute, or who have contributions of $1,000 made in their name, to the Rotary Foundation.

Also attending the installation ceremony were Rotaract members led by Genelin Camacho, Hillary Agulto, Jaiden Santos, Keoni Hosono and Richard Baleares.

Ayuyu expressed her appreciation to D&Q Distributors International, SP Dancoe & Associates, Duty Free Shop, IT&E, Docomo Pacific, WSTCO and I Love Saipan for sponsoring the induction night.

The entertainers were Larry Lee and Kui Lee.
