(DPS) — On Thursday, Sept. 10, 2020, at about 12:05 p.m., the  Department of Public Safety received transmission via radio regarding a deceased individual aboard an incoming vessel. Police units responded to the port of Saipan.

Authorities on Saipan inspected documents pertaining to the procedures done on Guam, but the only documentation that could be provided pertaining to the deceased individual was the documentation stating that the individual tested negative for Covid-19.

Because there was no documentation regarding the time of death or the cause of death, DPS will conduct further investigation pertaining to this incident.

The captain of the vessel stated that on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020, at about 4:30 p.m., he noticed one crew member laying on the floor in his room.

He stated that the individual had no pulse and was not breathing.

The captain said he went to the bridge to notify other crewmembers aboard the shipping vessel about the incident.

He returned to the room with some crew members, and they began chest compressions and cardio pulmonary resuscitation  but to no avail.

The captain then used a flashlight to see if the individual had movement in his pupils, but there was none. The captain and crew then left the individual in the room until they arrived on Guam the following day.

On Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020, at about 7 a.m., the shipping vessel arrived at the Guam seaport.

The captain of the vessel notified the Guam Police Department, Customs, the Coast Guard, the Guam Fire Department, and the Centers for Disease Control.

The captain of the vessel stated that personnel from the Guam Covid-19 task force came aboard the vessel and tested the individual for the virus before fire department personnel secured the body of the individual in a body bag and placed it in a refrigerated container.
