THE Department of Public Lands has announced its first scholarship essay contest for post-secondary students who are of Northern Marianas descent.

The essay question is, “Why is it important to preserve public lands in the CNMI?”

“Public land is not government-land but it belongs to people of Northern Marianas descent,” said DPL special assistant to the secretary Deveney Dela Cruz.

“As stewards of our public lands, we would like to provide the opportunity to award NMD students financial assistance and to understand and share your thoughts on the importance of public lands through this year’s essay question,” DPL stated.

The essay must be between 500 and 800 words, and written in either Microsoft Word or PDF format. It must be submitted no later than Nov. 23, 2020 at 10 p.m. Chamorro Standard Time.

The prizes are $1,250 for first place; $1,000 for second place; $1,000 for third place; $1,000 for fourth place; and $600 for fifth place.

The sponsors of the contest are Triple Star International Corporation, Bibong Corporation LLC, Saipan Stevedore, and Kenneth and Concepcion Coward.

Contestants must be enrolled full-time in a U.S.-accredited institution, pursuing an undergraduate degree, vocational trade certificate, graduate or post-graduate program in the spring or fall 2021 term.

They must also be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits for undergraduate students or a minimum of 3 credits for graduate or post-graduate students.

They do not need to be on-island to win.

DPL Secretary Marianne Concepcion-Teregeyo is encouraging  eligible students to submit their essays.
