Hatchet piece

RECENTLY I and Saipan were the subject of a hatchet piece penned by a Chinese author writing under an alias.

Normally I ignore this kind of blatant defamation as the price of running a series of successful businesses. But the article is just one prong in a larger campaign of character assassination. So, in addition to pursuing legal remedies against the author, I also want to set the record straight with you, the community.

The article begins with a whopper. The headline alleges that “The Largest Real Estate Broker in Saipan is Double Punished for Advertisement in Shanghai.” But that’s wrong. Neither myself or any of my companies are in trouble in Shanghai for advertisements or anything else. And any suggestion to the contrary is simply the work of a character-assassin-for-hire hiding behind the anonymity of the internet.

The rest of the article is similar rubbish. For example, the article alleges that I encourage investors to obtain leases through NMD proxies. But the opposite is true. I generally recommend that investors own land in their name or, preferably, an LLC owned by them. The article also makes the silly claim that I hold leases lasting longer than 55 years. But why would I? There’s no benefit and plenty of harm for a lessee to do so since that kind of lease is void ab initio.

If only the article stopped at petty falsehoods against me. But because I invest in Saipan and write a regular Chinese-language column that educates others about investing here, the article also launched a broadside of accusations against Saipan. These attacks, like those against me, were largely invented.

In particular, the article argued against investing in Saipan. But I disagree. The reality is that while times are tough, Saipan is full of long-term opportunity. As a result, I will keep investing, encouraging others to do the same, and offering support where I can. Because together we can make Saipan the best it’s ever been.
