ROWEL “Cobra” Mariano emerged victorious in Saturday’s SBA/Budweiser Captains Meeting Billiards Tourney at the 9Eleven Restobar.

Mariano had a smooth ride at first but his first opponent, George Lizardo, gave a good fight. The rounds were split even, 1-1, but when it really counted, it was Mariano that triumphed to advance further in the double-elimination format contest. Mariano continued to deliver as he swept Warlee Ellama with ease taking both rounds to secure a spot in the semifinals.

Lito Castolo, who also notched two consecutive wins, was stopped on his tracks by Mariano in the semifinals. It was a fairly even match but Mariano was the more consistent player.

For his part, Rey Hermogenes started from the bottom after losing to Lito Castolo in the first round. But Hermogenes bounced back with a win over Daniel Miranda, 2-0, and Joel Bunag, 2-0. He scored his third straight win against Ellama and then earned a rematch with Castolo. This time, Hermogenes won, 2-1, to face Mariano in the finals.

Hermogenes handed Mariano his first loss of the night, 2-1, but the “Cobra” was able to find his stroke in the winner-takes-all match by completely shutting down Hermogenes, 2-0, to win the championship which included a Mcdermott Pool Cue, a cue-case, a Budweiser hat and $25 cash prize.

His worthy adversary Rey Hermogenes won a Mcdermott Pool Cue, a Budweiser hat and $15 cash prize while third placer Lito Castolo received a billiards gloves, a Budweiser hat and $10 cash prize.
