JAN-NASIA Travilla, a Mount Carmel School AlumKnight and a former member of the CNMI Women’s National Basketball Team, has been recognized as one of the top athletes of the University of Guam in school year 2019-2020.

The Triton Athletics Department named her as the Most Valuable Player in the 2019-2020 women’s basketball season.

“It was very surprising,” Travilla said in an interview with Variety. “The thought of winning the MVP award never really crossed my mind because of the level of competition out there.”

University of Guam's Jan-Nasia Travilla soars in transition during one of the games in the 2019-2020 season.

She said her season with the Tritons was “challenging.” The fall season, she added, “was a killer with practices from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m., and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on some days. The spring season was overwhelming because we lost two of our main point guards and only had one to two subs during games.”  Each player had to “step up and push through, especially when we were playing at the Andersen Air Force Base during March Madness.”

During her 2019-2020 season with the Tritons, Travilla learned that being confident and having a positive mindset on the court can go a long way. “It’s important to keep your head up if you miss shots or turnovers because it’s a mistake you could learn from and prevent in your next ball possession.”

The 20-year-old shooting guard from the University of Guam is humbled by the MVP title as she acknowledges the support from friends and family. “I would like to thank my coaches that helped me before I moved to Guam. Coach Elias Rangamar for always encouraging and pushing me to do my best and my former high school coaches, Mr. and Mrs. Toves, for always believing in me! Most especially my family and those close to me for always reminding me that they’ll be by my side every step of the way during the tough days!”
