(MVA) — Thanks to this year’s Wacky Awards, you don’t have to be the fastest to win the Saipan Marathon set for March 14.

The Marianas Visitors Authority will be looking for the winners of several wacky categories: Best Costume, Male; Best Costume, Female; Craziest Hair; Most Awesome Shoes; Ugliest Shoes; Shortest Shorts, Male; and Shortest Shorts, Female.

To date, about 700 participants have signed up for the race, with offline registration continuing for CNMI/USA registrants through Friday, March 6, at 5 p.m. at the MVA office on Beach Road in San Jose.

“We are looking forward to a fun and festive time at Saipan Marathon 2020 next week, with both strong competition from our serious athletes and some creative entries for our Wacky Awards,” MVA Managing Director Priscilla M. Iakopo. “We thank all our sponsors, supporters, and participants for making this year’s marathon possible, despite all the difficulties, and we invite the community to come out and either run or cheer on our participants from on- and off- island.”

MVA will be looking at creativity for its top choice in each category, and prizes will be awarded.

The annual run features 10K, half-marathon, and full marathon courses and is a signature event of MVA.

Runners will receive a finisher’s t-shirt, finisher’s medal, and entry to the marathon awards banquet at Fiesta Resort & Spa. Saipan Marathon has been certified by the International Association of Athletic Federations and the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races, making it a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.

Powerade returns this year as exclusive sponsor, and Skymark Airlines, which provides direct daily flights from Tokyo to Saipan, is a Platinum sponsor, along with IT&E. Hyatt Regency Saipan has signed on as a gold sponsor, and silver sponsors are Budget Car Rental Saipan, Coca-Cola/Foremost, Grandvrio Resort Saipan, Saipan Apparel, Saipan Plant Center, and Subway. Supporters include Northern Marianas Athletics, the Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Memorial Park, the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Public Works, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, the Division of Parks and Grounds and Hawaiian Rock Products.

The race start will start and finish at American Memorial Park, starting at 4:30 a.m. for the full marathon, at 5:30 a.m. for the half marathon, at 5:45 a.m. for the 10K, and at 6 a.m. for the 5K. The cut-off time for the full marathon will be 8:30 a.m. at the half-way point. There is no cut-off time for the half marathon, 10K or 5K.

All competitors are required to pick up their race packets on March 13, 2020, at American Memorial Park. Pickup times are 3-4 p.m. for team/groups/tour groups/etc. and 4-6 p.m. for individuals only.
