Editorial: The Inkling

Her passion to serve, unfortunately, went unnoticed and she did not get the necessary votes to win; however, two other women – Kathy Kesolei and Regina Mesebeluu, who are, without any doubts, among the movers of Palau – are guaranteed to be sitting in the Senate chamber early next year; and most likely, change is certain to follow suit.

I find it intriguing that next year – even if no bills are passed and enacted into law within the first two years of the new governing body – at least the view and the mannerism is definite to change. The women represent the will of the people for a change.

I think Palauan women are destined for politics, especially law-making – and have been for centuries.Culturally, Palauan women have ruled and made definitive policies that govern everything from minute things to major events.Think about this.Palauan women have, for as long as Palauan history is retold, decided who among the Palauan men get to be chiefs.

I think it is about time that Palau steps into a taro patch – fishing beyond the reefs has proven to be too time consuming, costly, and the people have often eaten nothing more than the by catch. At least, in a taro patch, I would know that feet will be muddied but within a year’s time, the taro would mature – and most certainly will not migrate to another taro patch by itself – and could be served in so many forms to people.

Don’t get me wrong; women are not better than man or otherwise. However, since Palau is now more inclined to gauge things based on statistical data, I think there is just so much more evidence that suggest that women will do well – Governor Sugiyama of Ngardmau, Governor Reklai of Aimeliik, and Governor Kanai of Airiai have not faltered yet.

On a personal level, my dear meticulous wife – whom my children sometimes refer to as the “maker of rules” and whom I, for safety reasons, I prefer not to cross – has managed the details of the many cultural events we have had to attend and on many occasions has figured out a way to directly or indirectly dictate who does what and when in and around the house.

If you have doubts about the women senator elects, it is best you put them to rest. They will make OEK the most productive taro patch – one that is likely to feed Palau.Jump in and find out!
