I feel bad that we are either too busy working to make tomorrow better or pulling others to live in the past; and in the process, we have meticulously decided not to live today – for fear of taking away from tomorrow.
It used be that people lived on daily basis and lives were dependent on one another. The new perception calls for independent living and survival of the fittest. You and I are caught in the middle and we are about to split – I can’t give it a name. However, I have come to realize that it is just our quest for material things – from the latest development of cell phones to the virility and softness of toilet tissue – that drives most of us to work excessively; and due to lack of time and sleep, today is often ignored, as well as the people present. It is funny to think that most of us wake up each morning prepared to work – pumped with caffeine or nicotine or both; and a few tablets of Tums to tame the rising heartburns (possible ulcers caused by strenuous and perpetual worry) – and once at the job sites, get busy calculating the costs of items needed in order to keep up with developing tomorrow. The society has gone from the “what we need” to the “what we must have” because tomorrow and the people who have staked all their hopes in it dictate so. Walk into the major stores in Palau and just browse and you’ll see what I mean. The number of brands of toilet tissue on the shelves is just too much – and the prices range from expensive to bitter high as well. I wonder how much flushable time is wasted on which brand is “most appropriate” for toilet business activities. And so, you and I have tagged along – we cannot afford to be left in the past. Our longing for a better tomorrow – often misconstrued to be better than today – has forced many us to define our needs ahead of time. We are best prepared for disasters that we have created ahead of time and we have saved more than enough for them; yet, many us are struggling today. Why is that? Who gets to enjoy the better tomorrow? Will our children repeat what we are doing today?I think you and I should pay more attention to today before it becomes yesterday. Tomorrow will never leave us and it can wait. If you shop after reading this, buy the cheapest of toilet papers, no one will notice where it’s going – and it will wipe just as well and would join the expensive ones in the end. Use a little of your time to enjoy today with the people love – they’ll remember you tomorrow.
