The Inkling

I have always assumed that life is predestined that no matter how much effort is put into prolonging it, it will end when its time comes.  Having said that, my health is often my last concern each day I wake – two capsules of 500 mg of acetaminophen and a couple of cups of coffee have always chased away yesterday’s pain; and there are many more capsules of painkillers and an assortment of brands of instant coffee set aside for tomorrow’s aches.  Hence, I rarely worry about my health until I feel pain.

I was told recently that I worry more about my jalopies and have neglected to take of myself – I would have blatantly disagreed had I not walked into the hospital last week and witnessed friends and relatives suffer from ailments that could have been prevented had they been a little more concerned about their health.I talked to some of them.  A few claimed that they opted to stay from the hospital and doctors because “it is too darn expensive.”  They say that the cost of routine health check-ups is beyond what they can afford.  I wonder if they ever will calculate the cost of their “check-out” from Earth, as they lie helpless on the hospital beds – inclusive of the funeral costs and the unknown credits they had established, which would somehow quadruple when their lives expire. The Ministry of Health has taken a very active role to promote preventive health.  It has taken every measurable step to make people aware of the dangers of unhealthy human behavior.  It has gone from state to state warning people of unhealthy diet, consumption and use of mind-altering substances, and has on numerous occasions conducted workshops and forums in advocacy of healthy life-styles.You and I are among the many who have chosen to live otherwise – much like some of my friends and relatives who are now bedridden.  I tell you, it becomes chronically expensive not to heed the advise from the Ministry of Health; and if you are really worried about the cost of healthcare, I highly recommend you spend a few bucks on regular health check-ups.  It is exactly the same as maintaining your car – a regular oil change will cost a lot less than a new engine.Even better, all the medical professionals at the Ministry of Health took a saintly oath and cannot refuse to serve you, even if you do not have a dime to your name. Your mechanic, on the other hand, can hold your car until you have settled you bill with him or charge you for rebuilt parts you did not need.Walk to the hospital today.  Your engines are scheduled for maintenance.
