LAST week, 7/12/22, Marianas Variety published a front-page article stating that the Bureau of Military Affairs won the Liberation Day float contest with a picture depicting its rendition of “Camp Susupe.”
Of course, I’m all for freedom for everyone and I realize that “liberated” can have different meanings to different people in different circumstances, for example, “liberated from his ex-wife” or “liberated from the demons of alcohol.”
But in this case, the Japanese et al in Camp Susupe were not being liberated; they were being deported and repatriated. Hardly seems like a cause for a July 4th celebration for the CNMI nowadays.
I always thought the main point of the July 4th celebration was the closing of Camp Chalan Kanoa where the indigenous people stayed.
Color me confused,
