Letter to the Editor: A simple change

We are the ones who should be blamed. The political efficacy in the CNMI is minimal. We have developed a culture of voting for our families rather than standing up for ourselves and making the right decision for our future. The political culture in today’s society is not about who our family is, it’s about who can a make a major difference in our society. In order to have an effective government, it is important to have an ideal person capable of representing the people. The voters must also be aware about why they are voting for that candidate with a purpose rather than to acknowledge him or her as a relative.

For example, I was reading a full page senatorial ad in the newspaper a couple of days ago. I am sorry to say this, but 90 percent of the ad explicitly states the candidate’s family including those who are deceased. This is ridiculous and discreditable for the people of the CNMI. Why do we judge people based on who our relatives are? This is insane; we must stop that and learn something more ideal and significant to benefit the CNMI. Instead of talking about who our relatives are, let us consider having adequate ads that will encourage the people of the CNMI to vote for the candidate based on his or her goals, accomplishments, and strategies to improve our government. The people must understand that this is not about family; this is about our government and for the sake of the future generations.

Perhaps the most sufficient way to be elected is to organize public forums, show the community that you deserve to be in office through the work you have done, and organize a debate/forum. This is more cost-efficient and educationally productive for the community.

Another disgraceful and wasteful strategy are parties for campaign support. Usually the people would attend these events just for the food and drinks which is hilarious.  Do not be cheated by these kinds of candidates who do ridiculous things which seem like bribery and do not let yourselves be fooled; it is part of their devious plan to steal your vote. It is best that we make them realize they should work SMARTER before the elections.
