Letter to the Editor: Are you ready for change?

For so long now, we’ve talked about change and I’ve also come to the realization that we all want it.  The problem is we expect that the people we elect will bring about good change and rightfully so.  But, if we really want change, it should start from within.

Politics is not any different.  Every political season we are given options to decide the kind of leadership that will bring about positive change to our community.  Our problem is that we don’t hold ourselves personally accountable for the type of leadership that we elect.  We’ve been playing the blame game for so long.  We tell ourselves that we don’t have a choice because we feel obligated to vote for the person who employs us and puts food on the table.  We tell ourselves that we don’t have a choice because “lania” they’re family!  We tell ourselves that we don’t have a choice because we must swap our vote for the Philippine trips, rosary donations, party donations, and countless other freebies being passed out as part of being with the party  (patida.)  We tell ourselves that it doesn’t matter anyway because ultimately no matter who we vote into office, “it’s only four years!”  Well keep telling yourself that!

We’ve come so far but yet we are still far off from where we need to be in our personal lives and in our politics.  When you look at your kids, can you honestly say to them that this is the best quality of life that you can offer to them?  Ask yourself, where do you see our community headed to in the next four years?  What kinds of opportunities do you want for your family?  Ask yourself, will this government provide the opportunity to help you help yourself.   Ask yourself, ARE YOU READY FOR CHANGE?

Thank you for your time.
