The giant sun was slowly sinking and darkness was inevitable. At 7 p.m., delicious assorted dishes were on top of a long table, including a crispy roasted pig, or lechon, fresh fruits and ice-cold cans of juices and beverages. We were with friends and family members, reminiscing about some of the unforgettable events and activities on this beautiful island. There was laughter in between conversations as we exchanged views and ideas. Some were serious, others were funny. The birthday celebrant was very busy with his flashing camera, taking photos. The night was too short and we decided to camp underneath the huge trees at Susupe Park.
When the night was over and dawn came, there was hot coffee, fried rice, eggs and the delicious aroma of lechon paksiw which woke all the campers inside the tents and we were surprised to see the birthday celebrant behind the kalan (gas stove), preparing breakfast. The event was extended until lunch. Friends who were not able to come during the previous night met the birthday celebrant at lunch time. At 2 p.m., April 3, 2011, the pavilion was cleared of tents and tables.
A good friend, a generous birthday celebrant and a consular officer will be packing his things come April 25, 2011 on his way back to the Philippines. We were sad to note that his tour of duty (six years) as a consular officer of Saipan is about to end. Packing his personal things, leaving a few items to neighbors and friends, shaking hands with each and every one of us with a smile, he repeatedly tells us: “Thank you for your hospitality, friendship and generosity.”
The Bicol Association in Northern Mariana Islands and friends would like to extend our warmest and sincerest appreciation to Mr. Jose Rey B. Madrilejos of the Philippine Consulate General where he served as consular assistant and ATN officer. He served his fellow Filipinos on Saipan, Rota and Tinian. He is a good community member and a great public servant. Good luck to your future endeavors Rey and your future assignment!
From Tel Aviv, Israel to Saipan, rest assured that your legacy and professionalism in assisting OFW’s will always remain in our hearts and minds. Bon Voyage to you Rey & wife Tess and best wishes! On behalf of the Bicol Association of Saipan and the Marianas Association of Filipino Engineers and Architects, we wish you both good luck, God Bless, Mabuhay Kabayan!
Bless you and more power! Mabalos!
