Letter to the Editor: Bravo DLNR

YOUR article last Friday entitled “3 Lawmakers Cited for Illegal Hunting,” to some degree, helps in restoring the people’s trust in their government. Laws are written in books for good reasons, but meaningless if they are not enforced. They should and must be enforced uniformly and on everyone, no matter what your station in life may be.

The people of the commonwealth have basically put an “Off Limit” on the islands of Guguan, Asuncion, Maug, and Farallon de Parajos or Uracas when the Constitution was approved. This “Off Limit” is necessary to preserve and protect the natural resources of those islands, including birds and other wildlife and plants.

The constitutional provision recognizes that as the population of the inhabited islands grow, fish and wildlife with food value will most assuredly be diminished and may be extinct if no safeguard for preservation is put in place. Designated sanctuaries as provided in the Constitution and those areas around Saipan will help in the preservation of our meager and diminishing natural resources.

Public education is mandatory and strict enforcement of the law is necessary so that we may be assured that our children and their children and generations after them will know what a coconut crab looks and tastes like.

The people of the commonwealth owe a great deal of gratitude to the many dedicated public servants who take their duties and responsibilities seriously. Every once in a while the public needs to single out these men and women and compliment them for the excellent work that they are doing. We take our hats off to the officials of the Department of Land and Natural Resources for being vigilant over the protection and preservation of our natural resources. Keep up the good work. We owe it all to our posterity.LORENZO LG. CABRERA
