They left with the hope that they would be able to return to the island within a few weeks and that they would be able to receive the money they are owed by their former employer. So many cases go into our local labor department and it’s difficult to tell when — or if ever — the disposition of the cases will be completed.
I am hoping that at least one or two of them will be able to return to the island. A couple of them now realize their mistake and regret their decision to return home. While they haven’t lost hope to return to Guam, they have expressed their dissatisfaction with the local and U.S. labor departments.
Within a few short months there will be tens of thousands of guest workers who will be coming to Guam to face the reality of their status. H-2 workers are being abused by employers. I have seen so much apathy and pride demonstrated by those who are supposed to look out for the welfare of the less fortunate. Instead, they only care about what the feds will say about them. It is absolutely disgusting to me.
