That is all well and good, but it is not a legacy. A legacy is achieving something really remarkable on a significant issue.
I would suggest that the governor concentrate in his 10 remaining months in office on establishing a new and improved political status as his legacy.
I suggest that he convene the Commission on Decolonization and the Guam First Commission to address, as an urgent matter, the issue of political status.
We need to figure out how to jump-start this matter, picking up where it left off just before he took office seven years ago and moving the ball forward. We need to leverage the military buildup and the enhanced attention that is gaining in Washington, D.C., to work the political status issue.
Achieving substantive movement on a better political status granting greater self-government will be a legacy for our governor far better than merely a change in name of the island.
