Letter to the Editor: Hello, Saipan friends

Some of you may be interested in the one hour documentary made by NHK TV in 2005 to commemorate the ending of WWII. That documentary was made on Saipan. Several locals were filmed. I have a Japanese language copy, but I understand that an English version was made to submit to a film festival.

My life here in Cedar Hill, Texas, 18 miles southwest of downtown Dallas, remains uneventful. I have not traveled abroad since 2007, but my health remains very good. I have a balance problem, but often do a mile walk using a walker.

My book on WWII is finally being proofed, and hopefully, will be in print shortly. Another exciting book is soon to be published about the Battle for Saipan by James Campbell who lives in Wisconsin. His book, THE UNDERMOUNTAIN BOYS, was a great read about WWII on the Malay Peninsula.

I will be 87 this year, but am planning to visit Saipan in June 2014, if the island plans to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the battle.

I wish to thank so many of you for staying touch. I am beginning to feel that Saipan is home. I spent three weeks there in 1944, a month in 2004, and three weeks in 2005, and met so many of the lovely residents.

Semper Fi.
