Letter to the Editor: Immaculate heart of Marpi

From a bird’s eye view off the cliffs I wouldn’t want anything to blurry the scenery as I look down below. Marpi is almost what you would call a sanctuary to get away from the fast-paced modernization on the south of the island.

Our thinning jungles throughout the island are what we have left and destroying acres of them is just contributing to it.

Do you remember years back when film producers were going to film “Windtalkers” on Saipan starring Nicolas Cage?

Instead of filming here, it was filmed in Hawaii because Marpi had a “modern look” — it would just not work.

Our island does not have a rainforest so leave what’s left of it. Lush vegetation don’t grow over night and will take decades to recreate on its own.

I am beginning to think that the government is an invasive species like the ivy scarlet gourd that kills the jungles.

If you ever listened to the song “Planet Earth” from Pacific Islander singer Oshean, he lays out the details of modernization and it’s effects in the near future.

His songs of preservation won him international fame. Why can’t we do the same? We can’t because the government’s playing another tune.

There are a lot of Kagman homestead lots. Lots that were given to applicants and failed to have a home built because he or she failed to build a home or even made an effort to build one. The lot could easily be given to a wait-in-line applicant.

It clearly goes to show that our government just don’t give a hoot. I demand our legislators to do something about this disgusting uncalled-for move.

I guess the only thing to do is create a human barricade to block these bulldozers. As activists in other countries are trying to prevent deforestation, we are trying to encourage it. A government without a head is no head at all. What do you think?
