Letter to the Editor: It’s our right

IN his letter to the editor, Kyle Calabrese criticized your newspaper on how it reported a letter written by Dusean Berkich addressed to me and also bashed my “privileged” speeches on the floor of the Legislature. Criticizing a journalist on how he does his job or a representative for voicing his views is certainly Mr. Calabrese’s right, but that’s not what is noteworthy here. (By the way, did he mention that he works as paralegal for Calvo & Clark?) There is something more remarkable about the letter addressed to me from Mr. Berkich.

I never received that letter from Mr. Berkich! Imagine my surprise when I first found out about it while watching the KMCV news. I had to request a copy from them to read it myself. It looks like Mr. Berkich was more interested in getting his opinion “out there” than addressing me personally on the issues surrounding Bank of Saipan’s scandal.

We may not always agree with someone’s opinion, or how he performs a job, but it’s our right to express ourselves publicly. We celebrated July 4 for our freedoms which include freedom of speech and freedom of the press which help make our country great.REP. STANLEY T. TORRES
